FAVOURITES ABMS are hoping to make it three out of three when they take it to the court against Pinoy 1st Edition in Group A of the regular seven stars category of the LBC Cup at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat tonight.

The 2009 Brunei Pepsi Cup champions, formally known as Babes Boutique, are coming off a hard fought 106-95 victory over El Tigre Marshalls last Saturday while Pinoy 1st Edition are riding off an 88-73 defeat to the tournament's other favourites, Palm Cafe, on Oct 29.

"I'm not satisfied with our performance against El Tigre Marshalls. This is because of the lack of practice where we only manage one session per week," said Kaka Espartero, the head coach of ABMS, when contacted yesterday.

"We are still trying to adjust to the seven stars rule. It is very difficult as most of our main players have two or three stars.

"There was no such rule in the Pepsi Cup and we could put everyone on the court.

"But the rule helps balance out all the teams," added Espartero.

Philippine Embassy to teach the art of Hilot

By Tony Alabastro

The Philippine Embassy through the Philippine Overseas Labour Office will be conducting a free training session on physical therapy on Sunday, November 15, at 1:30pm at the embassy's multi-purpose hall.

Sponsored by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), the training programme aims to provide overseas Filipino workers with a new skill for their livelihood project in preparation for their reintegration to the Philippines, said Welfare Officer Zenaida Ramos.

The body is healed while health and well-being are improved through the rubbing or kneading of body parts to aid blood circulation and relaxation of the muscles. This is one of the oldest and simplest forms of physical therapy.

Registration is open to all Filipino overseas workers on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants are requested to wear jogging pants and to bring a small towel, mat and extra shirt for the training. Interested individuals can register at the Philippine Embassy with Welfare Officer Zeny or Ms Cha who can both be reached at 2237053.

Hilot is an ancient Filipino art that utilises the gift of knowledge in healing through therapeutic massage and plant oil. "This traditional Filipino massage uses the technique of manual soft tissure manipulation," said Gina Zoleta-Vistal, a Manila-based physical therapist, during a recent session at the Philippine Embassy.

Touching the head and pressing it with hands relieves the headache of a person suffering from dizziness or hilo. Hence, hilot comes from the Tagalog word hilo (dizzy).

Gina explained the hilot methods, which her former students, Felipa Bermejo, Solomon San Pablo Sr and Solomon San Pablo Jr, demonstrated to an audience of over 50 overseas Filipino workers.

Baclao may miss Patriots' game

(The Philippine Star) Updated November 05, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Despite injury woes to two key players, coach Louie Alas of the Philippine Patriots remain confident of their chances against the Singapore Slingers when they clash on Saturday in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) at The Arena in San Juan.

“They neutralized the Indons (Satria Muda BritAma) with their full court press last Sunday, so we plan to use that same strategy against them. That’s the only way we can beat them,” said Alas. “We have to be patient on the defensive end.”

But Nonoy Baclao and guard Christian Coronel remain doubtful starters for the Patriots with hamstring injuries.

“Nonoy wants to play on Saturday but we’ll have to assess his condition tomorrow,” said Alas.

Baclao, who helped Ateneo win back-to-back UAAP championships, had seven points, five rebounds and five shot blocks in the their 74-61 win over the Thailand Tigers last Oct. 24.

Like the Slingers, the Patriots, according to Alas, also boast of role players capable of employing the full court press although stamina will play a big factor in the match expected to go down-to-the-wire.

“I expect a different game for the Patriots this time, different from the first time they played in Singapore last month,” said co-team owner Mikee Romero. “It’s going to be an exciting game.”

With Filipino import Al Vergara and American Michael LeBlanc on the firing end, the Slingers beat the Patriots, 74-69.

They went on to sweep their first four games, including their fourth straight win by thumping the Indons, 96-72, to remain the only unbeaten team in the six-nation tournament using a home-and-away format.

LBC Cup: Superio engineers Beaver's comeback victory

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Sunday, November 1, 2009

BEAVER ENGINEERING turned around a poor first quarter performance to beat Liga Bumiputera 75-65 in last night's LBC Cup action.

Competing in the regular seven stars category, the match at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat saw Liga Bumiputera take the lead in the first quarter, according to Beaver Engineering's coach Tony de Vera.

"But we came back strong in the second quarter and led by eight points, I think," said de Vera in a telephone interview yesterday.

"I think Liga Bumiputera are very fast because they are a young team, but we managed to come back and maintain our game leading up to the third and fourth quarters.

"We were able to control their play as the game progressed," added the coach.

It was their second win of the competition, the first an 82-46 result against Menglait All-Stars in their opening game last Saturday.

Vincent Superio was at the forefront of Beaver Engineering's attack once again, the sharp shooter the game's top scorer with 31 points.

"It was a really good performance from him (Superio) tonight (Saturday night) but it was not surprising since many of our players know him," said de Vera.

"But we never underestimated our opponents and they played a great game," said de Vera, adding that their next game is against Morley Movers next Sunday.

Hj Md Rahmat Hj Suhaili led Liga Bumiputera in scoring with 17 points.

The all-Malay team competed in the 38 years old and above category of the 3rd Manjaro Cup as a guest team last month and won all their games. However, they were without key players such as Ahmad Termizi Hj Nordeen, Zainul Ashyraf Hj Hussin and Ikram Damit last night.
