FOLLOWING their 80-82 home loss to the Singapore Slingers last Sunday, Brunei's first professional basketball team, Barracudas, are looking to bounce back against the Philippine Patriots tonight in the inaugural Asean Basketball League (ABL).
"We are totally ready and are confident on giving them a hard game. We will just try our best to win as we have the disadvantage heading into every game as the underdogs," said Barracudas head coach Bong Ramos in a telephone interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.
Ramos mentioned that they are going to have a very difficult time against the Filipino side who are under an experienced coach Louie Alas, who after completing his duties with the Letran Knights in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), made his ABL coaching debut and led the Patriots to a 74-61 rout of the Thai Tigers last Sunday.
"We know each other's systems as we have played against each other in the NCAA and PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) before. We sort of know each other inside out," commented the ex-Indonesian national coach about his counterpart.
The Barracudas coach knows that they will have their hands full as along with the return of Alas, the Patriots also added three star players from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) to their lineup: Val Acuna, Nonoy Baclao and Elmer Espiritu.
"They are even deeper in bench now as these are very good players. These three didn't play against the Slingers which could have been the difference in that game," said Ramos. "The Patriots are still one of the strongest teams in the league as they are an all-around team with good defence and stamina. I'm ready to face a team that can run and probably apply some good full court pressure defence," added the Filipino mentor.

LIGA BUMIPUTERA are ready to showcase what they got when they take on Beaver Engineering for the regular seven stars category of the LBC Cup tonight at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.
"We are ready for the game. I've been putting the players through the normal drills and teaching them the game situations just to keep them in touch," said Hj Md Sofrian Hj Md Yusof, coach of Liga Bumiputera.
When asked on what he thought of his opponents, Hj Md Sofrian said: "I haven't really seen the way they play. But I know that it'll be a hard match. However, this will be a good test for the players to gain some tournament experience."
Liga Bumiputera will be banking on Hj Md Rahmat Hj Suhaili, their only player on the team with two stars, to deliver and steer them to victory.
"I'm ready to step it up together with my teammates. We'll have to rely on our teamwork and communication and hopefully we can put up a good game and probably cook up a win," said Hj Md Rahmat.
The all-Malay team competed in the 38 years old and above category of the 3rd Manjaro Cup as a guest team last month sweeping all their games. However, the team will be missing other key players such as Ahmad Termizi Hj Nordeen, Zainul Ashyraf Hj Hussin and Ikram Damit who are away for their studies and busy with work commitments. BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
Friday, October 30, 2009
AKK DESIGN kicked off their campaign in the 45 years old and above category of the LBC Cup by demolishing IMD B 80-54 at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat last night.
Jojo Apat had a game-high 35 points for AKK Design and Rogel Diaz poured in 14 points.
On the other hand, IMD B were led by Ronnie Ramos with 18 points and Andy Pasion with 16 points.
Both teams started out slow from the field but AKK Design, made up of players below the age of 45 years old, upped the tempo towards the end of the first period to take an 18-8 advantage into the second quarter.
AKK Design were relentless on defence not giving their older opponents any chance by applying full court pressure.
IMD B had difficulty bringing the ball up the halfway line. This led to turnovers as AKK Design punished them on fastbreaks.
AKK Design were in the driving seat leading 39-18 heading into halftime.
IMD B began to slow down in the third period while AKK Design never let their guard down to run away with victory.
AKK Design were meant to be in the regular seven stars category but due to late entry could only participate as a guest team.
"There were no more opening slots in the seven stars category because they handed in their registration late. So we could only put them in the 45 years old and above category as a guest team," explained Mhar Porlahe, the president of the Filipino Basketball Association.
Despite being a guest team, Romel Galano, captain of AKK Design, was delighted with the result.
"Our aim is to win the game eventhough we're in this category. It feels great to be able to win our first game despite having some new players in the team," said Galano.
Galano pointed out that they were also taking the games as preparations for future tournaments. "What we actually want to do is to build our stamina and try out our set plays," explained Galano.
In the second match of the night, Palm Cafe came up on top 88-73 against Pinoy 1st Edition in Group A of the seven stars category.
Geve Leones topscored for Palm Cafe with 20 points while Marcelino Magaan scored 18 points for Pinoy 1st Edition.

BARRACUDAS' captain Francis 'Kiko' Adriano yesterday urged the fans to give the team more time to adjust after their 80-82 loss to the Singapore Slingers on Saturday night at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.
It was their second straight defeat at home following their 73-76 loss to the KL Dragons at the same venue last Saturday.
"We are a new team. We are still adjusting but we're already looking forward to more games in the league to improve," said Adriano in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.
The Barracudas had led for most of the game against the Slingers but the turn of tides occurred in the third quarter and they squandered their 44-39 lead at halftime to be down 59-62 heading into the final stanza.
"I think that we were unlucky to have lost the game. (Kyle) Jeffers hit that three-pointer at the buzzer and (Al) Vergara came back with another basket that really killed us late in the game," said the 34-year-old Filipino. Read more...

Barracudas go down fighting

IT IS another case of so close yet so far for the Barracudas who fell 80-82 to the visiting Singapore Slingers last night their second straight defeat in the ASEAN Basketball League at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

Last night's defeat followed the 73-76 loss to KL Dragons last Sunday.

Michael LeBlanc led the Slingers with 32 points while Kyle Jeffers and
Al Vergara chipped in 15 points and 17 points respectively for the Singaporeans.

On the other hand, Leo Avenido topscored for the Barracudas with 20 points while Lonnie Jones poured in 17 points. Barracudas' other American import Mike Pilgrim had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
In their opening game on Oct 11, the Slingers had come away with a comfortable 87-69 win over the Bruneians at the Singapore Stadium.
The turn of tides occurred in the third quarter of that game and it was the same story in the Barracudas' second loss to the Singaporean side.
The Barracudas had taken a 44-39 lead heading into halftime but poor execution at the offensive end saw the Slingers grab the lead for the first time from the home side at 51-50 with six minutes left in the third quarter with a three-pointer by Hong Wei Jian.
The Slingers were active at the defensive end and were boxing out to grab the rebounds.
They continued executing well in transition while LeBlanc caught fire to put 18 points on the board as they sit on top 62-59 heading into the final stanza.

The home team ran out of steam and only got their first field goal after three minutes in the final period through Pilgrim, who followed up a Jones's miss.
The Slingers, meanwhile, were making crucial shots down the stretch and the Barracudas were not helped by their poor free throws, making only two from eight attempts in the final period.
Vergara made a crucial jumpshot with 25 seconds left to make it a two-possession game with the scores at 75-81 which put the game beyond reach despite Avenido knocking down a three-point buzzer beater.
Coach Bong Ramos felt that it was poor execution and stamina down the stretch that led to their downfall.
"In the third quarter, we didn't execute well while the Slingers played tough defence which really made it hard for the guys. Before the game, the Slingers were the team to beat but I'm happy that the team are improving and we will just have to continue building on it," said Ramos in an interview with The Brunei Times after the game.
"I felt that it was our stamina once again that let us down. Hopefully we can add more players to the rotation as everyone on the team is slowly improving on his stamina," added Ramos, who played Benjamin Sim and the Bruneian responded by scoring five points for the night.
The Barracudas lost to the KL Dragons last Sunday and were dismal from the free throw line going 13/23. This time around it was just as poor going 15/27 last night.
On the other hand, the Slingers went 12/16 from the charity stripe.
"I don't want to blame anybody but we missed quite a bit but I know that the players had tried their best to win the game," said the 48-year-old Filipino.
The Barracudas started out hot as they made six straight baskets to open up a 12-7 lead midway through the first period. The home team were playing man-to-man defence and were executing inside the paint.
Meanwhile, the Slingers were relying on their outside shooting to keep themselves in the game down 22-25 heading into the second quarter.
The Barracudas were getting back on defence and continued to attack from the low post. They managed to open up a double digit lead 34-24 midway through the second quarter.
The Brunei side managed to protect their lead, despite the Slingers putting up a full court pressure defence, at 44-39 going into halftime.
"I'm finally getting into the routine. I wasn't thinking about scoring but more towards the win. Credit to the Brunei team tough as they have pushed up to the limit," said Leblanc after the match.
The Slingers coach, Frank Arsego, said that it was his two American imports that allowed them to win the match. Arsego also praised the Barracudas after their hard fought victory.
"This was a great game as they were different from the first game two weeks ago. They will definitely get better after more games," said Arsego.
The Barracudas next game will be in Manila against the Philippine Patriots on Oct 31.
